Cranfield University is offering a fully funded PhD student position (Early Stage Researcher, ESR) within the EU-funded Marie Skùodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) REMEDIATE (Improved decision-making in contaminated land site investigation and risk assessment - http://questor.qub.ac.uk/REMEDIATE/). The ITN brings together researchers from 10 organisations and 15 partners across Europe and multiple disciplines (ecology, microbiology, engineering, environmental physics, environmental chemistry contaminant science, modelling) to develop new innovative and cost effective solutions to challenges facing the sector.

As an ESR at Cranfield University, you will collaborate with scientists in the School of Energy, Environment and Agrifood (SEEA) and partner organisations within the REMEDIATE ITN to deliver an integrated risk assessment framework for complex contaminated sites that is supported by a comprehensive analytical assessment (ESR project 2.1 http://ec.europa.eu/euraxess/index.cfm/jobs/jobDetails/33998461).

This project will also yield underpinning science from the areas of environmental fate and behaviour modelling, chemical and risk analysis that will guide new remediation strategies. Specific objectives are:

1. Developing a diagnostic strategy and risk assessment framework for complex pollutant mixtures
2. Predicting fate and persistence of organic chemical mixtures
3. Predicting fate and persistence of inorganic chemical mixtures
4. Defining end point and linking bioavailability to toxicity changes

You should have a Master (MSc/MRes) or equivalent, or a first/second class degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Chemistry and Engineering, Environmental Microbiology or other closely related disciplines. Excellent English language skills are essential (speaking, listening, reading and writing). You should have prior experience in some of the following fields and a willingness to familiarise yourself with the others:

- Analytical chemistry (particularly gas chromatography
- Biogeochemistry
- Ecotoxicity
- Environmental Microbiology
- Fate and transport modelling
- Statistical analysis of environmental and geospatial data

As successful completion of a PhD is a core goal of the REMEDIATE ITN, you should be highly motivated, able to work independently, and dedicated to finding appropriate solutions to academic and technical problems. You will be expected to collaborate with both academic and industrial partners on the project, which will involve extended travel for training activities, workshops and secondments. You will also be expected to conduct field work within in the UK and Europe for your project and as part of the training network.

You should be available to commence employment as soon as possible, but by 1st September 2015, at the latest.

Please note there are strict eligibility requirements which apply to all Marie Curie Researchers. At the time of recruitment, you must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of you research career, should not have received a doctorate or equivalent, and resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the United Kingdom for more than twelve months in the last three years. Please note this does not preclude residents of the UK (which includes UK/EU nationals and those with settlement or permanent residence in the UK) from applying for this position provided you meet these requirements.
