PROJECT NAVAL ARCHITECT

Preference will be given to candidates who have a demonstrable track record in the design of Offshore Supply/AHTS vessels or other large marine projects.

Representative tasks, duties and responsibilities

a) Project Management

Perform all aspects of project management for projects with a budget of up to $1 million, to ISO 9001 standards
Perform the role of second in command to the project manager for projects with a budget in excess of $1 million
Preparation of project schedules (budget, work plans, etc.)
Project budget performance & technical quality
Preparation of project specs and engineering documents
Monitor individual project status (budget, work plans, etc.) and provide regular updates to the senior project manager.
Assign individual project tasks to project staff members.
Supervision of staff working on a project
Selection of project consultants
Manage project consultants
Perform individual project communications (regular project staff meetings)
Resolve project related issues
Coordinate / process project change orders
Initiate project invoicing (markup of Project List report for accounting)
Obtain Client Technical Approval of invoices
Be fully aware of ISO office standards, e.g. ISO 9001, & their purpose
Ensure project QA / QC is performed
Supports the marketing efforts of the President as needed
b) Proposal preparation

Prepare proposals for projects including identification of discrete task across all disciplines, assessment of manpower requirements for each task, requesting quotes from subcontractors, preparing the overall budget and RFP response document
Support the Proposal Manager in the preparation of individual Proposals
c) Technical Abilities & Tasks

Perform stability calculations, hull form development, sea keeping and power prediction calculations to support proposal and project efforts
Perform structural calculations using empirical formulae and specialized software, from Classification Regulations as well as from first principles
Prepare vessel arrangements for marketing and proposal efforts displaying knowledge of SOLAS and regulatory body requirements, together with knowledge of requirements for main and auxiliary systems.
Prepare structural drawing packages for submission to Classification Societies with limited input from PM or other structural resources within the office
Prepare production engineering drawings, cutting tapes and information packages
Prepare weight estimates to either class or production engineering level of detail
Develop models for FE analysis and have the ability to carry out basic analysis
Develop models for CFD analysis and have the ability to carry out basic analysis
Experience

Experience working with, or preferably for, a classification society
3 years of shipyard experience, split between a shipbuilder building vessels of at least 5000 Tonnes, and a ship repair yard. This experience is to include working with a large range of vessel types. These vessels types should include as a minimum the following:
military vessels
oil industry vessels
merchant vessels
cruise ships
ferries
patrol vessels.
Work experience is to include the following:
lightship surveys
inclining experiments
docking and undocking calculations
weight assessment
stability analysis
production engineering, control, and fabrication support
dimensional checking
lifting calculations
3 years experience working in a naval architecture design consultancy office
Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or better from an industry recognized institution. A Master’s degree is preferred.
Be enrolled in a recognized association of Naval Architects.
An excellent ability in English
Cognizant of all aspects of the management of projects, including, but not limited to, the following: establishing realistic working budgets, deliverable deadlines, budget tracking & analysis, prioritize and coordinate project schedules
Excellent time management ability
General Requirements

Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
Canadian Residency/Citizenship preferred. Ability to work independently or in a large project team.
