Ship Operations and Marine Technical Support – Nimitz Marine Facility
Thank you for your interest in vessel crew employment opportunities with Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Scripps Institution of Oceanography is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for ocean and earth science research, education, and public service in the world. Research at Scripps Institution of Oceanography encompasses physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of the oceans and earth.

The Scripps Fleet of four oceanographic research vessels and the research platform FLIP make up one of the largest academic fleets in the world. Scripps' ships include the flagship global-class research vessel R/V Roger Revelle, named after the former Scripps director and founder of UC San Diego; the R/V Melville, a global-class ship named after George Wallace Melville, a pioneer arctic explorer, engineer, and rear admiral in the U.S. Navy; the R/V New Horizon, an intermediate-class vessel that operates primarily in the eastern Pacific Ocean; and the R/V Robert Gordon Sproul, named after the eleventh President of the University of California, a regional-class vessel that conducts short missions off the U.S. West Coast.

Applications are continually accepted for the following per diem ships’ crew positions:

1st, 2nd and 3rd Officer positions (Oceans-Unlimited)

Able Seaman (Limited or Unlimited)

Ordinary Seaman

Marine Cook (Ordinary Seaman/Wiper Endorsement)

Chief Engineer (Unlimited Horsepower)

1st, 2nd and 3rd Engineer (Unlimited Horsepower)

Marine Electrician (Electrician/Oiler Endorsement)

Oiler

Wiper

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Candidates must possess valid U.S. Coast Guard documentation and endorsements for the position under consideration including:

Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)

STCW Certificate (watch stander)

VPDSD Endorsement (Vessel Personnel Designated with Security Duties)

ECDIS Endorsement (Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems) for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Officer positions

U.S Passport

Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)

Be able to pass a pre-employment U.S. Coast Guard physical and drug screen as a condition of employment

Finally, candidates must be willing and able to go to sea for extended periods – typical deployments average 2-4 months
