The Danish Armed Forces must contribute to promoting peace and security. The Danish Armed Forces are a key security policy instrument at the service of the Danish Government and Folketing (Parliament). The Armed Forces help to protect the values on which Danish society is based. This takes place on many fronts - both national and international.

The purpose is:
to prevent conflicts and war;
to assert Denmark's sovereignty and ensure its continued existence and integrity; and
to promote peaceful development in the world, with respect for human rights.
The main tasks of the Armed Forces are many and varied. They range from participation in international operations all over the world, to protecting Danish territory and helping to handle a large number of civil tasks. These civil tasks include surveillance of Denmark's territorial waters and environmental surveillance, preventing pollution, fisheries inspection, search and rescue services, ice services and participation in disaster management.

The Armed Forces safeguard peace and play their role on the basis of five core values: credibility, openness, trust, independence and responsibility.
