Berge Bureya Detained after Oil Spill in Strait of Malacca

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency The Capesize bulk carrier Berge Bureya has reportedly been arrested after the Malaysian authorities detected an oil spill coming from the ship while it was transiting the Strait of Malacca, according to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency. Namely, the agency said that the 289,800 dwt vessel was travelling from Singapore to Brazil when it sprung a leak from the starboard fuel tank. Data from the maritime agency suggests that approximately one ton of fuel oil was spilled, covering an area of some 20 nautical miles. According to Marine Traffics AIS data, the 1993-built ship is currently anchored off Singapore. World Maritime News contacted the vessels manager, the Singapore-based shipping company Berge Bulk, for details on the matter, but the company is yet to reply.
