Bulker Capsizes after Colliding with Tanker off Shanghai

zoom A general cargo ship capsized after colliding with an oil tanker in Yangtze river off the Port of Shanghai last Friday, according to local media. The bulk carrier Jiang Xia Xiang was berthing at Shanghais Waigaoqiao Port when it collided with the 41,983 dwt oil tanker Bai Chi. The collision reportedly happened due to violation of collision regulations in crossing routes. Shanghai Maritime Search and Rescue Center sent eight ships to assist the sunken bulker and its crew of 16, who were all safely transported to the shore. There is a slight oil sheen around the bulker, which at the time of the accident was carrying around 7,5000 tons of stone. The 2007-built Bai Chi, laden with 30,000 tons of crude oil, suffered only minor damages to its bow. Shanghai Maritime Search and Rescue Center has placed oil containment booms around the Jiang Xia Xiang, and is investigating the cause of the accident.
