Callao Backlog to Be Cleared in Up to Ten Days

zoom It will take up to ten days for the operations at Perus Callao port to go back to normal as the work is underway to clear the backlog resulting from the recent dockworkers strike, according to terminal operator APM Terminals. As informed, grain and fertilizer imports were hit the worst by the dispute. Operations resumed in Callao, Peru’s largest port terminal on Friday, as operator APMT signed a two year agreement with the striking workings delivering improved pay, health and union benefits for some 650 port workers. Members of the ITF-affiliated SUTRAMPORCPC union returned to work on 5 June following 24 days of strike action over fair pay and against anti-union discriminatory practices. The clauses agreed were enshrined in an agreement covering 2014 to 2016, and which include: a two-year pay deal, schooling allowance, health care loans and family/dependants compensation in case of death or injury. Estimates from Peru’s Association of Exporters (ADEX) show that the dockworkers strike cost Peru over USD 5 million a day, with the accumulated losses exceeding USD 100 million.
