Cargo Ship Runs Aground off Galapagos zoom General cargo ship Floreana ran aground yesterday while carrying provisions from the island of San Cristobal to Puerto Ayora, Galapagos Islands, according to the Armed Forces of Ecuador. At the time of the incident, the 1984-built, 2658 dwt ship was carrying 1500 tons of cargo and 13,000 gallons of fuel. The ships faulty propulsion system and ballast tanks are the possible causes of the accident. Authorities are on scene and are currently trying to pump out the fuel from the vessel. Local marine directorate deployed several barges to unload the ship. There has been no reports of oil spills or any other pollution to the regions fragile ecosystem, however, the authorities placed booms around the Floreana as a preemptive measure.
