Cargo Ship Sinks off Ecuador

A 1,200 dwt general cargo vessel San Cristobal sank around 25 nautical miles off Santa Elena Peninsula, Ecuador, in the morning hours of  November 16, the Ecuadorian Navy reports. At the time of the accident the ship was carrying some 1,000 tonnes of general merchandise to the Galapagos Islands, mostly food and construction materials. According to the local media, a fishing vessel rescued all 13 San Cristobals crew members. At the time of the accident, the ship was reportedly carrying 7 containers, one of which was recovered, one washed up on the beach, and one was wrecked on the rocks. The four remaining containers are unaccounted for. The Galapagos Cargo of Ecuador-owned ship was on one of its four monthly trips from Ecuador to the Galapagos Islands when it reportedly listed 15 degrees, before completely capsizing and quickly sinking.
