CSL Bulk Carrier Aground in St. Lawrence River Channel

CSL The 37,690 dwt bulk carrier Whitefish Bay ran aground in the vicinity of Hamilton Islands on July 12, causing vessel traffic disruptions in the St. Lawrence River Channel near Cornwall, Ontario. There were no injuries, water ingress or pollution reported following the incident, which occurred at approximately 18:10 EDT, Montreal-based shipping company Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) told World Maritime News. Relevant authorities have been notified and an assessment of the vessel condition is underway. The 225-meter long vessel reportedly hit the rocks and the river bottom, after which the captain attempted to turn the ship around. As the attempt failed, the vessel dropped anchors. The exact cause of the grounding is currently under investigation. According to AIS data provided by Marine Traffic, the 2013-built vessel is still aground. The ship left the Canadian port of Wellar on Monday and was en route to the port of Belledune at the time of the incident. World Maritime News Staff
