DNV GL to Class Stena Lines New RoPax Ferries

DNV GL DNV GL has signed a contract to provide classification services for Stena Lines new RoPax ferries to be built at AVIC Weihai Shipyard in China, as announced yesterday at Posidonia trade fair being held in Athens from June 6 to 10. Carl-Johan Hagman, Managing Director of Stena Line said that the company managed to develop a design that is 50 percent larger than todays standard RoPax vessels. We look forward to working with Stena Line, Deltamarin, AVIC and all the project partners to ensure the successful delivery of these highly efficient, future-ready vessels,” Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV GL – Maritime said. Intended for short international routes, the first four vessels are planned to be used within Stena Lines route network in Northern Europe. The vessels will have the capacity to carry 1,000 people onboard (927 passengers and 73 crew), having 3,100 lane metres in a drive-through configuration. In addition, Stena Lines new ferries will feature a length of 212 meters and a width of 27.8 meters. The ferries and their main engines will be gas ready, prepared to be fueled by either methanol or LNG, according to DNV GL. During the classification process, DNV GL said it will also carry out statutory work on behalf of the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
