DSME Signs Deal for LNG Quartet

zoom South Korean shipbuilding giant Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) has concluded the deal with Korea Line Corporation and Hyundai LNG for construction of four LNG carriers. The two liner companies will each manage two vessels. The order forms part of Kogas tender for 6 LNG carriers awarded last year. Under the deal, DSME was entrusted with building four 174,000 m3 LNG carriers, while Samsung Heavy Industries was assigned with the remaining two. The two carriers built by Samsung Heavy will be managed by SK Shipping. The LNG carriers will feature the newly developed KC-1 cargo hold system together with Kogas’ onshore membrane LNG tank. The quartets price tag amounts to a total of USD 800 million. These six LNG carriers are intended to be used to transport an annual 2.8 million tons of shale gas from the Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass port in the U.S.A. to Korea beginning in 2017.
