Engine Fire Leaves Flinter America Drifting off Alderney

Flinter America NV The 2010-built general cargo ship Flinter America was left powerless off the island of Alderney, Channel Islands, yesterday as its engine broke down due to a fire, according to the Maritime Operations Center CROSS Jobourg. Flinter America crew reported smoke coming out of the engine room, which was followed by a fire. The twelve-member crew requested for assistance but managed to extinguish the fire before the rescue crews arrived. Following an inspection of the vessel, a ruptured diesel fuel pipe which ignited the engine room was confirmed as the cause of the incident. The 11,000 dwt vessel, which was on its way from Djen Djen to Rotterdam, was not carrying any cargo at the time of the incident. The vessel is now being towed to Cherbourg, and its owner, the Netherlands-based transportation company Flinter America NV, would tow it to Rotterdam later.
