Extended Waiting Times Expected at Kiel Canal Schleswig-Holstein large ships drive through the Kiel Canal Ships transiting the Kiel Canal may be facing extended waiting times due to scheduled maintenance works at Brunsbüttel locks announced by the Kiel Canal authorities for the upcoming weeks. During daytime the Big Southern Lock will be closed due to diving and drilling works from 4th to 6th of November. Due to diving inspections the Big Northern Lock will be closed during daytime from 10th to 14th of November. Subject to the scope of works permanent closure might be necessary, container feeder operator Team Lines said in a release. The canal links the North Sea at Brunsbüttel to the Baltic Sea at Kiel-Holtenau. An average of 250 nautical miles (460 km) is saved by using the Kiel Canal instead of going around the Jutland Peninsula. Press Release, Image: Schleswig-Holstein
