Fire Breaks Out in Star Marias Cargo Holds in Venice

Vigili del Fuoco A fire broke out yesterday in cargo holds of bulk carrier identified as Marshal Islands-flagged Star Maria while the ship was docked in Italian port of Maghera, Venice. The local firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 18:50 local time to contain the fire which is believed to have started due to spontaneous combustion while the vessel was unloading coal. Fires accompanied with billowing smoke were reported in the vessels cargo holds 4 and 5. The fire was extinguished in a couple of hours as the cargo seals were shut. There were no reports of injuries. The 2007-built bulker of 82, 598 DWT remains in Venice, based on its latest AIS data. World Maritime News Staff
