Fire Breaks Out on Board Greek-Flagged Ferry

A fire broke out on board Greek-flagged ro-pax Ierapetra L on Saturday evening, November 29 while the vessel was heading for drydock  in Igoumenitsa for maintenance. The fire started in the vessels engine room, but was extinguished shortly after by the ships crew comprising of 23 members, Italian news site Brindisi Report writes. The ferry returned to port of Brindisi, where it had spent a month pending departure for maintenance works. The 1975-built ferry was 25 miles from the port of Brindisi, in Italian territorial waters when the fire was detected. Once informed of the incident, the Italian authorities dispatched patrol boats to the scene to assist the stricken vessel. There have been no injuries reported. The vessel is operated by Anek Lines.
