Gallery: Reefer Aground in Bosphorus

zoom Barbados-flagged 10,351 DWT reefer Crown Emma has run aground in Kireçburnu, on the eastern side of the Bosphorus, Turkey on Tuesday evening at 21:40 p.m., the Turkish Directorate General of Coastal Safety informed. The ship was en route from Varna East to Algeciras in Spain when it lost control due to a rudder malfunction and almost hit the petrol station on the shore. As informed, the ship failed to respond to the warnings of the Istanbul Ship Traffic Services before it got grounded having altered its navigation course. Turkish Coast Guard has dispatched rescue ships and tugboats to the scene to assist the vessel in pulling free from the grounding site. There have been no reports on injuries or pollution. The 1996-built Crown Emma is managed by Holy House Shipping AB. Turkish Directorate General of Coastal Safety said it would provide an update on further developments once available. The grounding comes in less than a week from a grounding of a Turkish-flagged dry cargo vessel Antakya on November 11. The 1974-built vessel was carrying a 2,500-ton sand cargo when it got grounded in Çanakkale, a city and seaport in Turkey, on the southern coast of the Dardanelles.
