GPA Sets Record December Container Volumes

Morton The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) set a new monthly record by moving 292,172 TEUs during December 2016, an increase of 12.3 percent compared to the same month last year. Roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) cargo followed suit, with a 12.3 percent rise in passenger vehicles and heavy equipment handled at Colonel’s Island terminal in Brunswick and Ocean Terminal in Savannah. In addition, Georgia’s deepwater ports moved 63,967 RoRo units last month. In 2016, the GPA marked its busiest year ever in loaded container traffic, handling 2.94 million TEUs, an increase of 71,083 TEUs over 2015. Total cargo across all terminals reached 31.2 million tons in the year just ended. The GPA also said that its board recently approved the purchase of new software to run gate, vessel and rail operations. The new software system will be phased in at GPA terminals over an 18-month period.
