Hapag-Lloyd Loads First Train Shipment for Peru

Hapag Lloyd German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has loaded a metro train with six cars today in Salerno, Italy, aboard the 2013-built containership Cerinthus, which will be transported to the Peruvian port of Callao. The journey from Italy to Peru is expected to last around 29 days, after which the train will be transported to the capital Lima using low-loader trucks. The cars, each measuring 17.6 metres in length and weighing 35 tonnes, were loaded onto the ship over the course of the morning using special cranes. The company said that this shipment is the first one under a contract to transport a total of 42 metro trains with 252 metro cars to Peru by February 2019. Hapag-Lloyd added that the preparations for this transport began almost half a year ago, with both the Hapag-Lloyd Special Cargo Team in Hamburg and specialists on the ground in Italy involved. The value of all of the trains to be transported amounts to around half a billion US dollars, according to Hapag-Lloyd.
