ILO: Algeria Ratifies Maritime Labour Convention

Danny Cornelissen/Nautilus International Algeria recently became the 79th Member State to ratify the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) with the International Labour Organization (ILO). The government of Algeria deposited the instrument of ratification of the MLC, 2006 in late July, marking another step towards worldwide ratification. The MLC, 2006 consolidates and revises the majority of the maritime labour instruments previously adopted by the ILO. The convention, which is considered the “fourth pillar” of the international regulatory regime, together with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Conventions SOLAS, STCW and MARPOL, represents a turning point, since both seafarers and shipowners can benefit from the standards that it sets, ILO said. In 2015, the Algerian merchant fleet counted 138 ships totalling 747,500 gross tonnage and the country estimated global supply of seafarers amounted to 1,137.
