Kenya Opens New Container Terminal in Mombasa Twitter/Uhuru Kenyatta The first phase of the new container terminal in Mombasa was inaugurated on September 3, Kenyas President Uhuru Kenyatta informed via twitter. The terminal is expected to boost the the volume of cargo handled by East Africas port of Mombasa by 50 percent, according to Reuters. The construction project, which was launched in March 2012, has an estimated value of up to USD 300 million. Capable of handling some 550,000 TEUs, the new terminal is expected to push Mombasas annual cargo handling capacity from from 1.05 million TEUs to 1.6 million TEUs. Upon completion of the second phase of the terminal, scheduled to be finalized in five years, the terminal could increase its capacity to about 2.5 million TEUs. World Maritime News Staff
