Maersk Boxship Spills Oil off Spain

zoom Spanish Maritime Safety Agency (Salvamento Maritimo) has sent out one airplane, one helicopter, and two ships to perform aerial survey and minimize the effects of an oil spill caused by the 2,320 TEU container ship Nele Maersk some 78 miles off the Catalan coast.  The crew of Nele Maersk reported the incident in the evening hours of September 8, describing it as an accidental spillage during a routine operation of fuel transfer between tanks. The 2000-built Nele Maersk and its crew of 21 were en route from Algeciras, Spain to the Italian Port of Genoa when the spill occurred. Salvamento Maritimo reported the incident to the Port of Genoa and the relevant authorities in Denmark, the flag of which Nele Maersk sails under. World Maritime News Staff
