MOLs LNG Carrier Fleet Gets VSAT Update

MOL MOL LNG Transport (Europe), a subsidiary of Japan-based shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), has signed a contract with NSSLGlobal to replace the underperforming and unstable legacy VSAT system on board MOL LNG’s fleet of 15 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. Eleven ships have been completed and a further three are being worked on. Many installations have been conducted while the ships were in active service, NSSLGlobal said, adding that the installation involved removing the old equipment, replacing with new racks and completing the task of configuring the antennas when the ships were moving. The new system meets MOL LNG’s performance and support requirements to deliver faster, more robust operational connectivity and ship-to-shore remote access, alongside improved crew welfare and MLC-2006 compliance, according to NSSLGlobal. Satellite communications is a key requirement onboard the MOL LNG fleet and is likely to continue as the industry moves into the era of the smart ship, said Henrik Christensen at NSSLGlobal.
