Norway Joins Forces with USA on Zero Emissions

Norwegian Maritime Authority As part of its efforts to develop green shipping, the Norwegian Maritime Authority has entered into an environmental agreement with the US state of California. The agreement with California offers opportunities for Norway. We have a lot to contribute with when it comes to for instance green shipping, green data centres and climate-friendly production, Vidar Helgesen, Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, said. Lasse Karlsen, Technical Director of the Norwegian Maritime Authority, who was part of the Norwegian delegation, gave a speech on green shipping at a seminar organized by the San Francisco Port Authority on August 3. Karlsen informed about NMAs work on various zero emissions projects, such as the battery-powered ferry Ampere, and he talked about the Authoritys efforts on developing hydrogen-powered vessels. Helgesen also stressed the importance of Norways position within battery propulsion and autonomous ships. Norway’s objective to become a green competitor and to develop new and environmentally friendly technology will however, also require international cooperation, Helgesen said, adding that Norway has ambitious environmental objectives for 2030 and 2050, including zero emissions in the transportation sector. A closer cooperation with California will contribute to the fulfilment of these objectives, Helgesen concluded. World Maritime News Staff
