Oakland Ports Exports at a Three-Year High

Port of Oakland Californian Port of Oakland has seen its export volumes reach a three-year high in October, soaring 20 percent over 2015 totals. The port said it shipped the equivalent of 89,473 export containers during the month, representing the fourth-largest monthly total in its history. The figure caps a year-long rally that has lifted Oakland exports by 10 percent above 2015 volume year-to-date. Increased export volume is nothing new – we’ve reported gains in nine of the first 10 months of the year, Port of Oakland Maritime, Director John Driscoll, said. Containerized import cargo volume increased 2 percent in October, while overall loaded container volume, including imports and exports, was up by 11.4 percent. The announcement comes on the back of US Board of Port Commissioners approval which was granted to TraPac, an operator of the second largest marine terminal at Port of Oakland, for an expansion project that would nearly double the size of the terminal. The construction on a new entrance gate could start in November and refurbishment of the remaining acreage would follow soon thereafter, TraPac earlier said.
