Oil Spills from Grounded Tanker off Sakhalin Island

zoom Efforts are underway to clean up an oil spill after a Russian-flagged tanker, carrying 786 tons of fuel oil and diesel fuel, grounded near the port city of Nevelsk on Sakhalin Island, Russia on Saturday, local authorities report. Due to rough weather conditions, the 1,139 DWT tanker Nadezhda crewed by eight people ran aground on November 28th, damaging its hull and one of its cargo tanks. There were no reports of injuries to the crew. The clean up operations were launched on Sunday, and included several rescue teams and two cleaning vessels. The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that the authorities will carry out necessary inspections, after which the vessel will be repaired and refloated. Meanwhile, the remaining oil on the 1986-built vessel was being transferred to other tankers.
