Pile Driving Kicks Off to Rebuild Pier at NWSA Terminal

NWSA Contractors have begun driving piles to rebuild Pier 4 of the Northwest Seaport Alliances (NWSA) Husky Terminal as part of a redevelopment aimed at supporting larger container cranes and vessels at the terminal.  The first of 1,241 piles were driven last week to align Pier 4 with an adjacent pier to create a contiguous 2,960-foot berth capable of serving two 18,000 TEU boxships at the same time. Construction is expected to occur 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, although more hours could be added, before the annual fish migration season begins mid-February, NWSA said. The reconstructed berth will also include conduit for future shore power to allow ships to plug into electricity while at dock. The pier is expected to be completed in 2018. In April 2016, NWSA assigned USD 141 million for the redevelopment of the Husky Terminal’s Pier 4, allowing it to accommodate two post-Panamax class vessels simultaneously.
