Port of NY-NJ Braces for Historic Storm

zoom A winter storm of historic proportions is expected to hit the Port of New York and New Jersey over the next 36 hours, the port authority said in a weather advisory Monday. Closing down of marine terminals at the port started yesterday and all of them are closed today. Decision on whether the shutdown will proceed on Wednesday is expected by noon local time. Total snow accumulation is likely to exceed two feet throughout the port, with the expected gale force winds, drifts could be even higher, the advisory read. In addition, the Long Island sound Point Judith Pilot station is closed since Monday, with anticipated opening scheduled for Wednesday, 28th of January. The US National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning and Coastal Flood Warning for Southeastern New England from Monday evening through Wednesday morning. The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port for Sector Northern New England has set port condition X-Ray for coastal Maine and New Hampshire. The USCG urged mariners and the coastal community to take precautions in preparation for Winter Storm Juno and flew flying storm tracks yesterday to warn mariners of the impending blizzard. Sustained winds will likely be 20 to 40 mph in a large area with gusts up to 55 mph. Even higher winds are expected in eastern Massachussetts, including Cape Cod, Nantucket and Marthas Vineyard where gusts of 70+ mph are possible. Snow accumulation is estimated at 20-30 inches, the Coast Guard said. As informed by USCG, seas could exceed 25 feet and winds could gust over 80 mph over water, making this an extremely dangerous storm for mariners.
