Port of Virginia Halts Hanjin Import Cargo Movement

Port of Virginia All terminals at the US Port of Virginia are closed for import loads from South Korean shipping company Hanjin Shipping, effective immediately, following the companys decision to file for court receivership.  However, Hanjins empty containers are not affected by this decision and the port will continue accepting them at the Pinners Point Container Yard (PPCY). As a result of decisions made by the International Longshoremans Association (ILA), based on the Hanjin Shipping bankruptcy, actions are being taken along the East Coast, affecting the ports facilities. Separately, the Port of Virginia said it set a single-month record for container throughput, having handled 235,511 TEUs in August. When compared to the same month in 2015, TEU volumes increased by seven percent. Other ports are also refusing service to Hanjin. Earlier this week, the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) said its Olympic Container Terminal (OCT) was not accepting or dispatching any Hanjin empty containers. In addition, NWSA Husky Terminal in Tacoma also refused to receive or release any empty containers from Hanjin. Furthermore, Terminal 46 (T46) in Seattle said that the terminal operator Total Terminals International (TTI) would accept imports but it would not receive empty containers.
