Siemens to Automate Africas MedPort Tangier Terminal

APMT German technology powerhouse Siemens has received a deal to supply electrical and automation systems and provide engineering and commissioning of 32 automated stacking cranes at Africas MedPort Tangier facility. Electrical equipment will be supplied for automated stacking cranes deployed in 16 intelligent yard blocks and 12 remote-controlled double trolley ship-to-shore cranes. This order for the terminal, operated by Netherlands-based APM Terminals, was placed by the Chinese Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC). Use of simulation and digital twins of the cranes in the yard blocks allow for flexibility, speed and work-through scenarios, Christian Koegl, Vice President of Siemens Cranes, said. MedPort Tangier, the first automated container terminal in Africa capable of handling ultra large container ships (ULCS) up to 20,000 TEU, is scheduled to be opened in 2019.
