Tanker Runs Aground off Rhodes Island

zoom A tanker carrying around 1,000 cbm of diesel ran aground yesterday morning near the Greek island of Rhodes, the Hellenic Coast Guard reports. The 2,415 dwt product tanker M/V Taxiarchis was on its way from the island of Simi to Anafi, when it ran aground in shallow waters, sustaining damage to its hull. Later in the day, the 1994-built tanker was refloated, and it sailed unassisted to the Port of Rhodes. The Rhodes Port Authority has detained the tanker until the damage to the hull is repaired, and the ships classification society gives it an all-clear. Ten crew members aboard the tanker aboard the tanker at the time of the accident were unharmed, and there have been no oil spills reported so far.
