Volumes Grow by Over 5 Pct at Indias Major Ports

APM Terminals Mumbai The average growth of Indias twelve Major Ports during the three-month period ended June 30, 2016 stood at 5.28 percent, while the ports handled a total of 212.78 million tons in the quarter, against 202.11 million tons seen during the corresponding period in 2015. Indias ports of Paradip, Visakhapatnam, V.O. Chidambaranar, Cochin, Mormugao and Kandla registered positive growth, while the other six ports, Kamarakar Port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Kolkata Port (Kolkata Dock System (KDS) + Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), Mumbai Port Trust, Chennai Port and New Manglore Port Trust, registered negative growth. The total traffic at Mormugao Port surged by 85.6 percent, mainly driven by an increase in iron ore and thermal and steam coal traffic, followed by the port of Paradip with a rise of 17.7 percent, while the third place was taken by Vishakhapatnam at a growth of 13.7 percent. Slight growth was reported at the countrys other ports of Kandla, Cochin and V.O. Chidambaranar, which saw an increase of 8.1, 5.4 and 0.02 percent, respectively. During the period, Kandla handled the highest volume with 35.8 million tons, followed by Paradip with 28.6 million tons, JNPT with 20.9 million tons and Vishakhapatnam with 20.9 million tons. Petroleum, oil and lubricants were handled the most, reaching 31.9 percent of the total throughput, followed by container volumes at 19.5 percent, and thermal and steam coal at 16.8 percent.
