World Fleet About to Receive More MSC Giants zoom The worlds largest containership MSC Oscar is soon going to be joined by her sister ship MSC Oliver in April 2015 followed by the rest of the family over the coming months. The vessel, the equivalent of four soccer fields when it comes to her size, featuring 395.4 m in length, is able to carry 35% more cargo while reducing CO2 emissions by the same amount. As stressed by Diego Aponte, CEO of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in an interview with the CNN, MSC Oscar is the most efficient vessel in the planet. The investment in a fleet of twenty vessels of this size makes sense when taking into consideration the principles of economy of scale. However, the question remains on how many ports can actually accommodate such giant ships. The world’s largest containership is currently on her maiden voyage from Asia to European major ports, which can squeeze in these behemoths of the seas. Nevertheless, as indicated in the interview, none of the ports in the United States have the infrastructural capability to do so. World Maritime News Staff
