Organization
The Chief Engineer is the head of the engine department. The Chief Engineer reports to the Master.
Authority
The Chief Engineer has the authority to:
Delegate tasks to engine officers and ratings.
Stop any work they consider to be hazardous to personnel, the environment or assets.
Education/Certification
The Chief Engineer must hold an Engine Officer's certificate appropriate for the vessel on which they are assigned.
Any other qualifications as required by Company Competence Matrix. This may differ dependent on Flag, country of operation, vessel type or client requirement
Working Experience
The Chief Engineer must have previous working experience as engine officer on vessel type. Exemptions can be granted with sufficient period of familiarization but must be approved by shore management
