Organization

The Chief Officer is the vessel’s second in command, and the Master's deputy. The Chief Officer is the head of the deck department. The Chief Officer reports to the Master.

Authority

The Chief Officer has the authority to:

Assume command of the vessel should the Master die or become incapacitated.
Delegate tasks to junior deck officers and deck crew.
Stop any work they consider to be hazardous to personnel, the environment or assets.

Education/Certification

The Chief Officer must hold a Deck Officer's certificate appropriate for the tonnage of the vessel on which they are assigned.
For DP vessels - The Chief Officer must hold an unlimited DPO certificate.
Any other qualifications as required by Company Competence Matrix. This may differ dependent on Flag, country of operation, vessel type or client requirement

Working Experience

The Chief Officer must have previous working experience as Deck Officer on vessel type. Exemptions can be granted with sufficient period of familiarization but must be approved by shore management

  • Sound interpersonal skills, good at motivating and building relationships.
  • Excellent English language skills; verbally and written.
