Cranfield University is one of the top five research-intensive universities in the UK and has an unrivalled reputation for transforming cutting edge technology, management and science into practical, life-enhancing solutions. In the recent UK Research Excellence Framework [REF] over 80% of the research carried out by Cranfield University was assessed to be either world or internationally leading, indicating the quality and impact of the work carried out at Cranfield University.

You will join a vibrant bioaerosol research group funded through the NERC Environmental Microbiology and Human Health programme, to work on the project ‘Rapid Monitoring of Bioaerosols in Urban, Agricultural and Industrial Environments’ (RAMBIE), undertaking research surrounding bioaerosol emissions in the environment. The vision of this programme is to provide the scientific evidence to support fast and efficient identification of pathogenic/allergenic microorganisms and biological material in environmental media which can be used in appropriate tools and models for the protection of public health.

The research will combine high throughput sampling methodologies with chemical marker analysis and new sequencing technologies to characterise bioaerosols from urban, agricultural and industrial environments. This approach will be achieved by a collaborative project with the University of Essex, University College London, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and the Environment Agency.

You will contribute to Cranfield Water Science Institute’s international reputation for its transformational research and teaching in the science, engineering and management of water in the municipal, industrial and natural environments.

You will undertake applied analytical research and work closely with partner organisations to investigate the feasibility of using chemical and molecular marker analysis for characterising aerosolised material of biological origin from different environmental sources. You will also be expected to conduct and manage field-sampling campaigns.

You will have a PhD in chemical, physical, and / or biological sciences or environmental engineering with a fundamental knowledge of environmental chemistry. You will have specialised knowledge and extensive experience of chemical
and molecular fingerprinting and analysis using gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. You will also be required to have the ability to ensure that milestones and deliverables are achieved to time and to high quality, as well as strong oral, written communication and presentation skills, good technical writing skills and client liaison skills.

In return Cranfield University offers substantive opportunities for professional development and we operate an effective collegiate working environment.

Cranfield University is committed to promoting a harmonious working and learning environment where everyone is treated with respect and dignity, recognising that the contribution of all its people will be most effective in conditions which are inclusive.
