OS is an member of the deck department The position is an apprentice to become an able seaman. OS performs a variety of duties concerned with the operation and upkeep of deck department areas and equipment. Duties to clean, to perform maintenance, to work with deck equipment, and to undergo on-the-job-training under the supervision of senior deck department members to preserve painted surfaces of ship and to maintain lines, running gear, and cargo-handling gear in safe operating condition; Mops or washes down deck, using hose, to remove oil, dirt, and debris; Chips and cleans rust spots from deck, superstructure, and sides of ship, using hand or air chipping hammer and wire brush; Paints chipped area; Splices wire rope, using marlinespike, wirecutters, and twine.
