Organization
The position as 2nd/3rd Officer belongs to the deck department. The 2nd/3rd Officer reports to the Master. In matters that fall under the responsibilities of the Chief Officer, the 2nd/3rd Officer reports to the Chief Officer.
Authority
The 2nd/3rd Officer has the authority to:
When acting as officer in charge of the navigational watch; to take any actions necessary to ensure the safety of the vessel and to call the Master as required.
Delegate tasks to deck ratings.
Stop any work they consider to be hazardous to personnel, the environment or assets.
Education/Certification
The 2nd/3rd Officer must hold a Deck Officer's certificate appropriate for the tonnage of the vessel on which he is assigned.
Working Experience
As required for holding the appropriate Deck Officer Certificate.
It is preferred that the 2nd Officer has previous experience from vessel type.
