Engine Department
Engine Department is most important equipment of ship organisation for safe and economic sealing in sea. Marine engineers are responsible for maintenance of the engine room. The chief engineer and ship engineer are responsible for ensuring that all planned mechanical and electrical maintenance takes place and Co-ordinates operations with shore-side port engineer. In the supervision of chief engineer whole department perform all technical aspect which is required for perfect and smooth sealing. The whole department is divided into different job designation according to job profile/role and responsibility. There are many designations in engine department which is determined by size and requirement of ship.

Well known designation accordance to hierarchy level of engine department:

He captain is in overall command of a Merchant navy ship and is responsible for the safety, efficiency and commercial feasibility of his ship. His duties are navigational at sea. While in ports he is responsible for cargo operations. He maintains orderliness and discipline in the ship. He ensures safety of passengers, crew and the cargo and assigns organizational duties for ship's operation, navigation and maintenance of the ship. He acts as the ship owner's representative with all outside parties. He implements the company's policies for operations and safety and the commercial instructions that may be given by the owners time to time. He is also the legal head of the ship..

Chief Engineer :
The chief engineer is head of engine department which is responsible for the entire technical operations of the vessel including engineering electrical and mechanical divisions. The whole engine department is worked in the supervision and command of chief engineer. In the present scenario chief engineer is getting 5500-10,000 $ US per month. For this position person should have minimum five to eight years experience on board ships.

Unlicensed Junior Engineer :
Stands engine room watch, assist licensed engineers with control room operations and maintain the shipboard propulsion equipment and auxiliary machinery.

First Engineer :
1st engineer performs daily maintenance and operations of the engineering and technical aspect of ship in the command of chief engineer. First engineer is responsible for all working activities in engine department and design training program for new crew. In the absence of chief engineer sometime first engineer take charge of engine department. In the present scenario chief engineer is getting 4500-7,000 $ US per month. . For this position person should have minimum four to six years experience on board ships.

Second and Third Engineers:
2nd engineer performs daily maintenance and operations of the engineering and technical aspect of ship in the command of First engineer. Second engineer is known as a watch keeping engineer who watches and assign repair and maintenance duties to crew in engine room. In the present scenario chief engineer is getting 3500-6,000 $ US per month. . For this position person should have minimum three to five years experience on board ships.
3rd engineer is responsible for maintenance and repair of engines and its relative equipments in ship. All the engine crew work in the guidance of third engineer. In the present scenario chief engineer is getting 2500-3,500 $ US per month. For this position person should have minimum two to four years experience on board ships.

Chief Electrician:
Responsible for the entire electrical system on board the ship. Extensive experience with minimum two to five years in subordinate positions on board ships required. Diploma from accredited maritime training school or facility and fluent English Language skills required. Salary range: $3200-3900U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line.

Electrician:
Responsible for the proper maintenance and repairs of the electrical system on board as directed by the Chief Electrician). Extensive experience with minimum one to three years on board ships required. Diploma from accredited maritime training school or facility and good English Language skills required. Salary range: $2400-2700 U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line. Possibilities for promotion to Chief Electrician.

Chief Electronics Technician:
Responsible for all electronic equipment, including navigation systems, network system, communications, passenger and crew cabins TV sets etc. Reprots directly to the Chief Engineer.
The Assistant Electronics Technician is required to be proficient in the use of all electrical and electronic test and monitoring equipment during the performance of repairs and maintenance on electrical and electronic equipment aboard ship. Reports to the Chief Electronic Technician.

Chief Air Conditioning Technician:
Responsible for the maintenance, repairs and supervision of all air conditioning and refrigeration systems as directed by the Chief Engineer). Extensive experience with minimum two to four years in subordinate positions on board ships required. Diploma from accredited maritime training school or facility and fluent English Language skills required. Salary range: $2300-3100U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line.

Air Conditioning Technician:
Responsible for the maintenance, repairs and supervision of all air conditioning and refrigeration systems as directed by the Chief Air Conditioning Technician. Extensive experience with minimum two to four years in subordinate positions on board ships required. Diploma from accredited maritime training school or facility and good English Language skills required. Salary range: $2200-2800 U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line. Possibilities for promotion to Chief Air Conditioning Technician.

Motorman:
Responsible for the daily maintenance and cleaning of specific engine parts as directed by the Chief Engineer. Experience with minimum one to two years on board ships required. Diploma from accredited maritime training school or facility and good English Language skills required. Salary range:$1500-1900 U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line.
Fitter :

Responsible for the daily maintenance and cleaning of engines and mechanical equipment as directed by the Chief Engineer . Experience with minimum one to two years on board ships required. Diploma from accredited maritime training school or facility and basic English Language skills required. Salary range:$1300-1800 U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line.

Wiper :
Trash pick up in engine room, tool pick up, general cleaning and painting of engine room. The Wiper's duties include general engine department maintenance, cleaning, painting, preservation of the ship and assisting unlicensed and licensed engineering department personnel with machinery repairs. Entry level position, basic English Language skills required. Salary range: $1000-1200 U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line.

Plumber :
Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all plumbing). Experience with minimum one to two years on board ships required. Basic English Language skills required. Salary range: $1500-1900 U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line.

Upholsterer :
Re-upholstering of all furniture as required). Entry level position, basic English Language skills required. Salary range: $900-1300 U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line.

Engine Utility Man:
Assists licensed engineers, performs general maintenance and repair of the ship's machinery, material handling equipment, including elevators and winches, and various other on board machinery.

Fireman:
Responsible for safety and firefighting on board the ship). Fire fighting certificate and basic EnglishLanguage skills required. Salary range: $1400-1800 U.S. per month, depending on the cruise line.

Oiler :
lubricates bearings and moving parts of engines and other mechanical equipment on vessel. Entry level position. Minimum English language skills required. Location: Worldwide
