The ship’s equipment includes basic E.R. resources but no x-ray facilities. Our pharmacy includes: medications for pain relief, antibiotics, sutures, topical ointments, intravenous equipment and a variety of products for the treatment of cuts and surface wounds. As we travel to more than 40 ports of call worldwide, from Norway to Hong Kong, some measure of supervision of student and staff files will alert the Medical Officer to any unusual medical profiles. Students will bring anti-malarial medication, all prescribed medicines that may be using, and will be vaccinated against Yellow Fever (obligatory) and other preventative vaccines, as recommended by their personal health care specialist.
While medical care, generally, does not require more than 30 minutes of the Medical Officer’s time, he or she is assigned simple deckhand duties and will stand 2 four watches per day. This role ensures a full integration with the team and makes for a dimension of involvement that is fun and gratifying.
Crew are paid a service per diem, enjoy the security of a full health insurance package, flights to assignment location, and return flight to home from Hong Kong. Room and board, are, of course included.
Requirements:
• Certification as an EMT able to meet the needs of primary care
• Experience in emergency services
• Good communication skills
• Ability to work within a team environment
• A passion for worldwide travel and, hopefully, for sailing aboard a tall ship
